This was the wedding we covered in Phuket last November. Was a pity that the weather didn't hold up, but everyone still enjoyed themselves. This was the first time we covered a religious ceremony officiated by 5 monks, quite interesting.

This was one busy wedding for everyone involved. Our team had very little time to get this highlights done for the evening as there was a lawn wedding ceremony at 5pm. Thanks to my wonderful team mates, we manage to show this in the evening. I am glad it was well recieved. Good job guys! Lately I have been covering lots of infant photography. Perhaps it's a natural progression of our productive Moomedia clients. Some of them even manage to cut short the process and deliver, before 9 months from the wedding date. How's that for productivity!

There is something about a crying baby that is endearing. Of course parents will quickly go to their rescue to comfort them and offer them security. Though capturing babies is no easy task, I am gradually taking a liking to it, because they are just so adorable. As Moomedia grows with our clients, I think I will soon need to be selling diapers, milk powders (melamine free!) and move on to selling toys, primary school uniforms, etc. hmmmmmm

This are the wonderful teenagers from my DMC class in Singapore Polytechnic. Seeing their carefree lives, seizing the moments to have fun, brings back that fire I had back in Poly and Uni days.

Trying to get them to grasp the concept of depth of field. Quite a few potentials out there. A few jokers around, but overall the class dynamics is so far so good.

I had the privilege to work with a hearing impaired makeup artist. Angel Chua must be one of the most diligent makeup artist I have met. Perhaps due to the condition, her visual attentiveness is astounding. She is always ready to help and assist the bride during the photoshoot. You can check out her blog at www.angelchua.multiply.com

This turned out to be a very interesting shoot. Dwayne and Sherren wanted to do a "back in school" theme and we found some retro playground which I grew up with. If anyone who grew up in the Singapore heartlands, don't find this a familiar sight, you are probably too young or you don't have a childhood. Hmmmm.

If anyone of you know of any retro places, pls drop a comment and I will explore these places for future bridal and MV shoots.

As a photographer, good referrals are worth more than a full page ad on a magazine. Alvin and Wendy got married in 2005, and annoyingly, still look as youthful when I met them in Hawaii this year. Alvin was one of the groomsman, and was the link to Joel & Susan who then engaged Moomedia for their wedding in Hawaii. Wendy taught me where to shop and what brands to buy, and educated me on the existence of Tokidoki. Thanks Alvin & Wendy, it was a fun few days.

SF is a wonderful place for photos. Its such a vibrant city, with so much to see and do. The Golden gate bridge and it's very steep streets are just some of the well known landmarks. The bride braved freezing winds by the bay. I was in my jacket and my fingers felt numb, imagine what my brides often have to go through. In Singapore we call it "ai sui mai mia".

Bridal shoot in Jurassic Park!

This shot was taken at the location where the opening sequence of Jurassic Park 1 was filmed. Apparently some parts of the chasing scenes of JP2 as well. We were shooting by the fence and the owner or someone who works at the site was driving in. He was kind enough to let us in and gave a little visual tour of where Spielberg used for his movies. Incidentally, JP1 premiered 15 years ago! Gosh I feel old...

The bride saw this picture recently and commented that she wished there were dinosaurs in the background, a T-rex but I figured this is more gentle. Here it is.. in pure fun.

Kauai island is known for its relatively untouched landscape. Waimea Canyon is touted as the grand canyon of the pacific, and having been to the grand canyon myself, I feel that it is still a sight to behold.

As a wedding photographer. Lot's of couples ask for my recommendations and opinions pertaining to their wedding planning. One of the FAQ is finding a good Justice of Peace to marry them.

My recommendation is Mrs Chia Swee TIn without a doubt. I use to cross path with a certain David L person who never fails to put a smile on my face for his "sing song" over-articulation as well as miss pronunciations.

Mrs Chia, on the other hand, is well articulated and full of charisma. Her delivery is clear, defined, and yet manages to inject a personal touch with some words of wisdom. I have met her well over 5 times and still she was able to make it a unique experience for each couple. Do let me know if anyone would like to see some JP in action samples clips, I am toying with the idea of putting them side by side. But in the meantime, if any couples need her contact, do drop me a line. (no commission ;p)

Pine Gardens Cake.

Ok ok don't judge me just yet. It's food again, but this is wedding related. ;p
Pine Gardens is a heartland confectionery, that made a mark in the wedding industry. Their Lychee Martini cake is legendary and I have had that in quite a few weddings.

On a side note, I also tried the famed ondeh ondeh, which is rated as top 8 in Singapore. I felt that it is commendable but not to die for. That unnamed bread roll on the right that looked like a giant sushi on the other hand, was a new found gem. It's soft, propotionately layered with pork floss, slice of ham, tuna, and seaweed. I don't even know what it's called, I should just name it HEAVENLY.

BCMs & TCMs

BCM is one of Singapore's favorite hawker food. BCM is of course non other than Bak Chor Mee, any guesses for TCM?

Ok, I was at ABC market where there are 2 BCM stalls side by side. Being a typical Singaporean, I followed the queue. But my friends bought from the stall beside it, which has no queue.

The one with the purple bowl was mine and the yellow bowl was from the less famous stall. And I tasted the yellow bowl first and then mine... I felt a deep deep sense of regret with a slight tinge of frustration and a whole lot of disappointment. The winner was clear... YELLOW!...

Yellow:
First bite: Flavorful, zesty chili
After taste: herbal tasting mushrooms with great taste

Purple:
First bite: Huh...? did they forget to put sauce?
Second bite: Still no taste maybe because never mix properly. mix mix.
After thoughts: k*n, waste my money.... just noodles and chili

Conclusion:
Don't follow the crowd blindly, my friends who lives in the area told me that the other stall has been around much longer actually.

Well lesson learnt. Do let me know if you have any BCM recommendations around Singapore, I shall take it upon myself to go try all of them!

No wedding can run perfectly without a glitch, but a perfect wedding can be made up of seemingly imperfect moments. I am sure this story will be remembered and retold years down the road.

Most guys are clueless about flowers and won't be able to differentiate the difference between daisies and daffodils. And Lavender is nothing more than an MRT station. This groom came in with a huge bouquet of roses meant for the car decor. The look on the bride's face when she first saw it was priceless.

When she eventually got her hands on the real bouquet, she was ecstatic.

This is a shot of the groom popping the champaign with the banquet manager. Some people consider it "boo boos" but I think these are moments that make each wedding unique.

True love's kiss?????

This is a common game the brothers will have to go through to get the bride. In this rendition, grapes were used. The groom with his band of brothers were suppose to pass the grape to each other using their mouth... only.

I have to commend this two brothers for the commitment and passion they put into completing the task. This "kiss" is more compelling and convincing than some of the couples I took over the years.

Chris and Kelli is a truly joyous couple. With their constant smiles and antics, this couple is serious about enjoying the most importantly day of their lives yet.

One thing, I am constantly thankful to God for, is to be blessed with great clients. Well at least most of the time. Though we met up only twice prior to the wedding. I felt really happy on their special day. It is especially so when couples include us in their thank you speech. It just compels us to go that extra step.

Dreaded dinner conversations?
Wedding dinner conversation is really an art, especially with people you don't really know. We were privileged enough to be invited to the dinner table with some of the friends of the bride and groom. Whether to allocate seats for the photographer is an age old question. There are even threads written about it. I know of associates who would decline it and others would demand it. Personally, I see it as a relational indication. Food is often extended across culture as a sign of hospitality. And though we do now oblige the client to do so, we will not decline either. But looking at the photographer and videographer sitting at the reception table at the wedding just next to our ballroom, I can't help but be thankful that we have clients who are concerned about our welfare, that translates to a better work environment, and better work!

I was at PC show the whole afternoon, thinking there will be absolutely nothing blog worthy... till the Sony technology showcase cum catwalk. There is something about a beautiful lady holding on to a piece of gadget that makes it all the more desirable.
You see a whole lot of guys ranging from young punks to cheekopek uncles, whipping out their big guns or compact shooters having a legit time ogling. On this side, I wonder if they notice the products at all, and over at the other end, I bet 90% of these models don't even know how to function them other then turning them on!

I can imagine them saying "erm I dun really like knoe what it does, but the colour really matches my nails. I lix to thanks sony for making my life so easy!

Ibu Oka serves the most famous Babi Guling in the whole of Bali. Even Anthony Bourdain rated this as the best roast pig he ever tasted. Though I visited Bali well over 10 times, I never manage to try this humble establishment. It opens at 11.30 and will be sold out in about 2 hours.

First bite: An explosion of flavour,
Aftertaste: Aromatically spiced with slight tingle of chili.
After thoughts: I will eat this again.. and again... heavenly. Though expectedly well glazed (oily), I didn't feel I didn't grow tired of it. But I moderated myself to leave with a longing rather then overeating. Unless you are religiously restrained, you will be silly not to try this. REALLY!

Sunrise in Amankila

The day of the wedding came and gone. The ceremony was held at Ayana Villa, which is the newest wedding pavilion in Ritz. I covered another wedding at the exact location 3 years back and it was nothing like this. They did a great job with the new villa, combining Balinese charm with modern amenities. I have to give it a 7 star rating. Remote control lights, Bose system, giant plasma, a beautiful rain shower, and rooms to die for. Classy.

The wedding officiator's Balinese accent was a little too strong, we were trying to figure out what is it that he was trying to say at some point of the ceremony.

The wedding dinner ended with a big bang which has become a Bali ritual for us. The only time we Lion city dwellers get to do this is to get married on the 9th of August or 31st Of Dec, or during the fireworks festival perhaps.

This HK couple, are friends of Gordon & Catherine whom we covered last year in Bali as well. Catherine is one of kind, she is the kind of person who lights up the room on entrance. Gordon is a little like me, very demanding, but very warm as well :)

The outdoor

Kenneth and Anna is a great combination. Having been together for 7 years, they have decided to get hitched in Bali. We had the outdoor shoot the day before the wedding. Which ended at black sand beach where the sand is naturally black? (don't ask me why)

At the end of this pier is an area for dining for the privileged few. It has seating for one couple and where they are served with fine cuisine whilst enjoying the gorgeous sunset with live Balinese music. It was rated as the 5th most romantic place to dine some years back. I am not sure if it still is, but at 500USD, one should assume it is.

Another trip to Bali where it all began...

I have been taking wedding in Bali since 2003 actually. This trip brings me back to where my first official overseas assignment was, Ritz Carlton Bali. I remember that wedding like it was yesterday. Jake and Patrina who now has a lovely baby girl, flew me over to cover their wedding, when I was but a newbie in the industry. I really want to thank them for giving me a chance to spread my wings. Thank you Jake & Patrina, you got us to where we are today, even if it’s an ongoing journey, you brought us closer to where we will be.

This is my favorite breakfast in all of Bali. Ritz has a great spread but somehow it just doesn’t have that wow factor for me anymore. Well, either the standard has dropped considerably or I have acquired a more exquisite taste bud, I would like to see it as the later.

New extended food area in Bugis Junction

I don't know how they do it, but they added like 10 new food kiosk at the basement of bugis Junction.... I already had lunch, so look out for my stall to stall review in coming weeks. So far.. I tried the giogio Prata cheese sausage that is obvious a rip off from gogo. Being a fan of gogo, this is really very mediocre I wasn't sure if I was really eating cheese sausage. Any sausage that doesn't squirt is a useless one.

If you read the Interlude blog... the Stylo Restaurant... this is where my interest in sparkling water sparked...

They place this bundle of 6 sparkling bottled water at the promotional stack... 6 for 14.70! Woow being a typical Singaporean bargain hunter, I wanted to grab it.. even if it means saving 20cents per bottle, also wu hua. And I was so typical that I wanted to calculate how much I will save. One bottle is $2.45. You do the math....

You are right... This carrefour marketing people have it all figured out, the illusion of value in quantity!!! Wow if i buy one this is what i pay.. buy 2.. i save zero cents, buy 100.. woow that is 100 x 0 cents.. = I save absolutely nothing.... such great value!

First day back in SG

I drove past non-arguably, self proclaimed the most beautiful road in Singapore to get to Tiong Bahru Market

Remember how I missed Kwey Teow Teng? on the road trip I was willing to pay 50AUD for a bowl if they can do it decently! Oh well that was a crazy thought, but first thing in the morning, I went to Tiong Bahru Market to hunt for my fav Singaporean food. This store was featured on channel 8's Buzzing cashier where they rescue cannot make it stores and some top chefs will train the hawker. I read that there is always a 1 hour queue, and well I saw that the queue wasn't that long so I went for it.

First bite: Not too bad... very prawnie soup but not very heavy.. pork ribs meaty but not smelly.
After taste: Because it's not too heavy on the taste. You don't feel gelat... (can someone tell me where this word is from)
Afterthoughts: Can buy if I am there and if no queue, but won't travel all the way to buy it....

Then I bought chew kwey. Tiong Bahru market is suppose to be famous for this. Went to the corner one. Well you know the rules, if it aint oily, don't buy it, cuz it's not nice then.

Firstbite: MMMMMMMMM
After taste: waaaaa damn full but completely satisfied
After thought: I will hunt you down... drive all the way from Jurong to get it? can!.. though petrol is more ex than this.

Last day in Melbourne

My Tram ride to the city... this image is of the melbourne sam-mun auntie from Yarra Trams checking ticket. Heng I bought ah. I remember those good old days as student, too poor to buy ticket, I will hide here hide there if it's a short trip. But people in Melbourne actually really have community spirit. When one passenger spotted the inspector, she shouted inspector! and everyone started to validate their ticket.

Then I went to Mekong again. And take a good look at this face. My good friend from Singapore Who works here. His wife is Vietnamese and they have 2 boys. Samuel and Emmanuel... Wuel... I code name him EL CHEAPO... the thing is.. this.. when he is back in SG.. i blanja him meals.. when I am in Melbourne, I blanja him oso.. what kind of world is this lor.. 2 words.. EL CHEAPO!

Went pass this place in Chinatown that has buffet style chinese food. You pay for a small or large plate or container and you can take whatever you like on the spread. I remember when I was studying, I would buy a small container and put in a plastic bag, and fill up the container in the plastic bag with overflowing dishes of veg and our household just cook rice with the veg and meat, such a good value for 3 person mann. Hey dun tsk me ah.. no choy, we poor students at that time.

I had dinner with my cousin Joel... then we went to this famous gelati place on lygon street after having Italian. He blanja dinner.. thats why i never call him names and i blanja back gelati. This shop is super popular among asian students and notice the liulian flavour at the korner.

Last activity was late night shopping and sale at Chadstone, one of the largest shopping center in Melbourne. I didn't buy that much because of the ridiculous exchange but I stumbled on this pair of aldo shoe for a very good lelong bargain, so I bought it.

Andrew Lau who puts me up in Melbourne.. or puts up with me.. however you phrase it, bought a floor lamp and the rest of the stuff is really from his GF who is taking this picture.

Stylo Restaurant walao price

This is rated as Melbourne's top 5 restaurant.

Heard about this stylo place from my cousin and her fiance some months back. Really wanted to try it out. It's won quite a bit of awards over the years. You can check it out at www.interlude.com.au

First dish was called "Olive our twist"
The green thing you see is a sour twist of what they call olive noodles. The black dots are dehydrated olives.... which must be very thirsty. abit strange for both of our asian taste, but its meant to open up the appetite.

Next up "Yam Chowder Smoked Tofu,Char-grilled squid"
This was a yammy dish and the foam on top though looks like ka pui, but is some kind of infusion. The so tong (spoken in ang moh accent) was not too rubbery but small like dunno what. i think 1 is enough for the restaurant for the night, very wu hua for them.

This is an interesting one. "Rabbit, Lentils, Liquorice Beignets"
Both of us Andrews happen to be born in the year of labbit. So its kind of evil of us. I was a little hesitant at first but the stylo ang moh captain assured it makes chicken taste strong. And true enough it's very mild. And flavours from the lentils and liquorice overpowered the dish with the labbit providing the texture. Very interesting.

"Sea Breme, Baby Gem, Morels,Barley, Haddock Air"
The dish is in a potty... tum pui looking bowl. And the airy foam looks like ka pui. Look at the picture, doesn't it look like toilet bowl with sai sticking out? Heng it actually taste better then it looks. Fish is fresh, under the foam got lots of liao.

This dish "Bacon & Eggs" won the dish of the year in Melbourne 2006.
The bacon is paper thin and the egg was slow cooked at 60 degrees for 1hr45mins. It's no wonder that the whole dinner took 3.5 hours to complete. But I must say the egg yoke doesn't taste anything like the half boil egg in Kopi tiam and doesn't leave that eggy aftertaste.

"Roast Chicken, Roast Egg, Leek, Truffle Paper"
The round bola is the tender roast chicken. The second white bola is a ball of egg when the roast juice injected into it, which was suppose to be the sauce when cut open. I didn't know that at first and put the whole entire bola into my mouth and it was so kium! Or what the ang moh would say is... there was a sudden explosion of intense flavour. Ohhhh

First dessert was "Almond, Rhubarb, Celery"
Fancy some veg in your ice-cream? The celery slices were also very thin actually. Interesting mix of flavours.

Finally, the "Prune, Chocolate,Pedro Ximenez, Hickory Oats"
Bits of prune and more foam infusion. The fancy oats provided a nice crunch to this dish.

And there is more.... Plate of sweets... CHOCO!
I enjoyed this very much.... but it came together with the tea which i thought was included in the menu. The waiter skillfully asked us what we would like to have coffee or tea, like it's included like that. Being a typical Singaporean, of course ai la. But later when the bill came, we found that it was extra. Look at my face below when I got the bill.

Nen bak gui kor leh... somemore now SGD to AUD is like almost 1.4!!! ayyoh... ok la.. while I didn't think the food was absolutely worth every penny, I thought the experience was worth it.

Pub by the dumpster

A friend brought me to some back lane alley way that has rows of waste bins and right at the corner where the red bricks are is the entrance to a rather cool little pub this is really cosy. He said this place is packed on thursday and friday nights when executives go there to chill after work. I will never imagine myself finding such a place.. especially when it's really among the bins... wat a waste!

900 KM road trip

The journey started from Sydney. The weather was a little overcast the first day. But the second day was great. The decision to go to the opera house in the morning was a sound one. We managed to take some great shots before the crowd comes in. It was really windy though.

On the way down to Melbourne, we drove a fair bit to the Snowy Mountain scenic route. As we drove up to 1800 meters above sea level, it was really cold. I applaud our brave bride Huingi to be able to endure this shot across Mt Kosciuszko which is the highest peak in Australia.

So refreshing to be back in Australia..... Although I have been here many times for shoot. Each couple brings about a new experience. Kelvin & Joanna is one fine couple. No matter how tiring the shoot can be, the energy you gather from this couple is immense. I have to say I enjoyed myself tremendously.

My first bowl of Kway Teow Teng

After just a few days in Australia, my Asian taste bud is beginning to tingle. I was craving for kway teow teng so much on the road trip that I was willing to buy one for 50AUD.... so in the end, the first thing we had for breakfast in Melbourne was this big bowl of Pho... pronounce "pfher". This is from a Vietnamese restaurant Mekong along Swanston street, that I frequent alot in my Uni days. Apparently Jacky Chan oso been there. I ordered a large bowl that looks much like a basin... and no matter how hard I tried, I just can't finish.

Once in a while, a wedding comes along, that connects you to your emotional side. When Derrick & Tricia read their vows to each other overlooking the city skyline at the oriental, you will have to be made of stone to be unmoved by their sincerity and honesty. Of course, I have to hold it together for those golden shots and pry at the sniffs that is around the room discreetly.

There is something about Bali that keeps me going back year after year. This is my 12th Trip to Bali. Well the sunsets never disappoint. There is also a sense of mystery in the culture that makes the photos rich and textured. I had a great trip with Sean and Yeni and we ate at lots of nice places after the day's shoot. Some of the famed restaurants include, Ku De Ta, Dirty Duck, and La Lucciola.

Just got to know that this couple is going to appear in various bookshops in Asia... they have become cover girl and cover guy! Look out for them if you happen to be in a major bookstore. Journeys For Two is a regional publication for destination weddings in exotic locations across Asia.

10th of January was the day we were commissioned as officers. We make it a point to catch up on this day every year. This year marked the 10th anniversary of our commissioning. And it was held at Barrack in Dempsey, which was incidentally an army camp ages ago. Very apt for the occassion. To many years more...!
